Sophos XG Firewall v17.1

Introducing the New Sophos XG Firewall v17.1

XG Firewall v17.1 is coming, and the latest version of Sophos XG Firewall will incorporate Cloud Application Visibility, which turns the hardware into a Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB) device. This means it will sit between users and the cloud, monitoring activity and enforcing security policies.

With the rapid growth in cloud applications and storage, organisations must take visibility into account and aim to expose any hidden risks related to the services they are using. This is where XG Firewall v17.1 comes in. A CASB device protects the data that you store in the cloud by delivering the following benefits:

  • Visibility– providing insights into the safety of the services you use
  • Compliance– ensuring that data in the cloud is secure enough to meet the requirements of legislation such as the GDPR
  • Data Security– including encryption, access control and rights management, as with all Sophos products
  • Threat Protection– the latest version of XG Firewall prevents malicious insiders and compromised accounts

Reporting within a CASB device

XG Firewall v17.1 enables users to see exactly how cloud services are being used by highlighting shadow IT in the cloud and alerting you to unauthorised behaviour. The new Control Centre widget provides an easily digestible view of all your network’s new, sanctioned, unsanctioned and tolerated cloud applications. It also enables you to see a detailed report on each application and its level of risk, so you can get unwanted cloud application usage under control

What else is new?

  • Synchronised Application Control

Ease of managing newly discovered applications has been made even easier, including options to search, filter and forget them.

  • Email Security

Users can now be managed with individual SMTP block and allow lists, via the user portal. Emails from senders matching domains or addresses in the block list are quarantined automatically, decreasing your chance of falling victim to a phishing scam.

  • SSL VPN Port Option

The option to customise the SSL VPN listening port has been highly demanded, so Sophos has made it a feature of the new XG Firewall.

  • Firewall Enhancements

The latest enhancements include improved flexibility and further streamlined management. There are now options to double-click a firewall rule to enable editing, to block Google’s QUIC protocol, and to be more flexible when defining ACL exceptions.

  • Wireless Enhancements

This update will provide the option to set the channel width for wireless radios in the GUI, as well as Radius Accounting.
